the tea: on thrifting

so, it is time for the tea.

thrifting; do you do it?

well you should and in this blog post i am going to be dishing out the tips and tricks i use when going thrifting as well as showing you my recent finds.

so, my #1 tip for thrifting is to go unplanned. don’t go into thrifting looking for a certain piece or outfit because you will tear your hair out trying to find it.

today, i went thrifting completely randomly and found more items than i really ever have. i didn’t go looking for a certain piece or even color really, i just went in looking!

D3036879-1AC5-426B-9D43-500E2D992DC2.JPG

so to start off the shopping trip, i found my go-to fashion item; t-shirts.

i tend to go to the tshirt section to look for oversized shirts to wear or shirts i can cut into crops. my style is generally more laid back and i wear a lot of crops and oversized shirts in the spring time.

all of these shirts were around $2-3 each and i was very happy with what i found.

next, the jackets.

Processed with VSCO with hb1 presetProcessed with VSCO with hb1 preset

although winter came to a close, i still wanted to check the jacket section for my next favorite fashion item – windbreakers.

i found these two for $6 each and i am suppppper exctied about them. i actually bought the wilson tennis jacket for my friend who plays tennis. i was sad to see it go, but i have a million jackets, i could spare this one.

the red jacket caught my eye and took me out of my comfort zone. red is NOT my color, but this jacket was super cute and comfy on.

so tip #2 is to go out of your comfort zone! try different styles, colors, and sizes, and SECTIONS. most of the clothes i thrift come from the men’s section. dont be afraid to try things out.

Processed with VSCO with hb1 presetProcessed with VSCO with hb1 presetnext, i headed to the blouses and picked up these two cute shirts for $3 each. one of them was NastyGal. NASTYGAL. ladies!!!!! thrit!!!!

the black shirt was hard to capture in a picture but it has a tie in the front and is cropped and is super stylish and cute. the yellow shirt is my favorite color and perfect for spring time.

Processed with VSCO with hb1 presetProcessed with VSCO with hb1 preset

these next two i caught last minute. the white top is so feminine and petite i was super happy to come across it. paired with a white bralette and a skirt is a perfect sheek spring outfit. the striped top was more my style and the buttons were such a cute add on.

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

the pants section!!!

i got 3 pairs of insanely cute pants. the first pair on the left is from j.crew and were a stretchy denim fit with a tie that scrunch at the bottom. the middle pair reminded me a lot of a pair i had from forever 21 and were super cute and retro. the black pants were stretchy black jeans that somehow i had none of?

total: $8.

tip #3 would be to try the clothes on if you can. this day, i didnt have the proper clothing on to try on my items, and honestly i was not in the mood so i just opted out of my own tip. but to confirm your purchase, try it on!

my last place i check in the thrift store is the book section.

and boy, did i hit a jackpot.

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

so not only was the deal buy 4 books get one free, i found all of the books that were on my Amazon wishlist for more than 50 percent off.

these books were THREE DOLLARS EACH PEOPLE. and i got one free.

incredible.

(if you want a book review on any of these, please lmk)

so ladies and gentleman, those are my 3 thrifting tips.

thrifting is so cheap and beneficial to the environment as well as helping out people and charities in need.

go in with an open mind, and getcho thrift on.

I shall go into the thrift store just to look, sure... thats what they all say. Next thing ya know your buying a ton of stuff XD

the tea: on blue light glasses

Photo on 3-13-19 at 9.33 PM.jpgthe tea on blue light glasses . do they work ?!

This has been a VERY requested post on the blog so I decided to dive into it.

I had heard about blue light glasses from multiple instagram influencers and commercials and really didn’t believe the whole “hype”. I have suffered from migraines since high school and looking at a computer screen and my phone screen has caused insane strain on my eyes and multiple headaches.

I had tried everything to fix my migraines. Sumatriptan, no coffee, coffee, physical therapy, etc. Things seemed to help temporarily but I still had constant migraines, especially in the hospital during clinical rotations.

So, I decided to give blue light glasses a try.

But what is blue light?

Now that you have a little more education on what blue light is, the glasses work to block out the light coming through from your tablet, computer, etc. The lights have a tinted frame that makes everything yellow when you wear them.

Photo on 1-18-19 at 4.57 PM.jpg

You can kind of see the yellow hue in this picture here.

“Bue light glasses are designed to filter out 55 percent of the 474-475 range of blue light that is emitted from digital devices. Blue light blocking glasses are effective at blocking out harmful light. Some blue light is necessary for our health because it helps keep us alert and aware during daylight hours.”

Blue light also forces our body to stay awake. So, when you are on your phone or computer late at night the blue light is convincing your body that you should be staying awake and makes it a lot harder to fall asleep. Exposure to blue light has been proven to reduce melatonin production at night.

Sleep was a major difference I saw in the effects of blue light glasses. I had such trouble falling asleep in general and would be on my computer into the late night for school, youtube, etc. Once I started wearing these glasses, I found myself able to fall asleep a lot easier.

Not only do I wear my blue light glasses at night on my computer, I also wear them in the hospital. The bright lights in the hospital caused intense eye strain and were a major trigger for my migraines and had even caused me to go home sick with a crippling aura filled migraine. Not to mention frustrating, but embarrassing.

I have been wearing my blue light glasses for a little over 2 months and have noticed an insane difference. I can fall asleep easier and quicker, I haven’t had light-induced migraines, my eyes don’t feel strained and I am able to get through an entire shift of clinical.

Whether it be the technology of blue light blocking or a placebo, I don’t care. These things have worked WONDERS for me and I will continue to wear them until they break.

The best part is I literally got them on amazon for $16, and they’re cute. IMG_8077.jpg

If you are interested in my blue light glasses you can find them here.

If you guys have any questions or want the “tea” on another specific product be sure to let me know via email or in the comments below.

As always, have a fabulous day.

Reflection on the First Quarter: Jan, Feb, March

Photo on 3-7-19 at 4.17 PM #3So, it is March, and I haven’t blogged since January.

Yikes.

These few couples months of the year have been actually amazing. It blows my mind how much change I have gone through since this time last year and seeing myself progress is so exciting. I am growing into the woman I want to be and this makes me want to scream with joy.

I have found so much love these past few months, within myself, my passions and within pursuing God.

I decided to take this time to reflect on the first “quarter” of this year and fill ya’ll in with where I have been.

January was pretty busy, full of schedule changes and goals that I never pursued. I went to the gym pretty regularly and was getting excited with my progress, but as I usually do, I gave up. I am quite disappointed in my lack of motivation to stay healthy and workout, but I plan on working on that. I got denied my dream job, I lost connections with a lot of people, but I made even more.

February was my favorite month, because it is my birthday month. I turned the big 21! I had a lot of fun with my friends and made even more genuine connections. I focused on enjoying life and minimizing the drama that always seems to follow me. I focused more on my schooling this quarter and got grades that began to prove it. I got my dream camera and started shooting and focusing on my long lost hobby. February was a month of growth and new beginnings.

And here we are with march. It is the 7th day of March and it already feels like it is going so fast. I have finished my midterms and I am now on spring break. I finished with good grade midway through the semester, but aware that I could have done better. I feel an overwhelming excitement and connection with God and I feel a new understanding of giving love and loving myself. I surround myself with the type of people that lift me up and I encourage all of you to do the same.

As for the rest of the year I’m working towards the best grades I have had, a job that I love, relationships that are genuine and thriving and to live every day with the love that God gave me. Live your life with the intention that every day could be your last. Seriously, from working in a hospital it has made me realize how life really is.

As always I hope everyone has an amazing week and day and night and all the things.

Love Languages

1_vazotthulongzcape3pb7q

As the year has rung in I have been trying to tap into myself and my relationships lately. I have been reading the book Attached by Amir Levine and have been struggling to get through it just because I need to set aside personal time dedicated to reading it. But a concept in that book is attachment styles and love languages.

Love languages have always been fascinating to me. We each have a love language specific to us, or multiple, and it is how we accept and want love in our lives. Discovering your partner’s love language is key to having a good and healthy relationship. (Not like I would know this is just for personal research, ha)

The five love languages are as follows:

  • words of affirmation
  • receiving gifts
  • quality time
  • acts of service
  • physical touch

The 5 Love Languages in Relationships

Words of Affirmation:

With the words of affirmation love language, words speak louder than anything else. This type of person appreciates kind words and being built up by words of affection. Simple phrases mean a lot to them, such as a simple “thank you” or “I appreciate you” moves mountains for them. Notes and expressions of love are what hits home for them, how they prefer to be loved. On the downside negative words hurt them a lot more than people who don’t have this love language. Choosing words wisely with this person can make or break your relationship.

Receiving Gifts:

The love language of receiving gifts is pretty self explanatory. This type of person finds the most love when people give them gifts or make them a gift that shows them that they thought of them. They believe that a gift shows them that their significant other understands what they love and goes out of their way to get it for them.

Quality Time:

The quality time love language focuses on spending time with their significant other. Doing anything with their significant brings extreme joy to this person and is how they feel most loved. Just being in the presence of their significant other makes them happy, even doing nothing with them.  This partner hates spending time apart from their significant other and long distance is often a deal-breaker or extremely hard for this relationship. If you are dating someone with this love language it is important to reprioritize so they feel like a priority in your life. Having a conversation with eye contact and actual listening skills is important too.

Acts of Service:

Setting up and making dinner, doing chores so the other person doesn’t have to. This type of person likes people doing things for them so they don’t have to. For example, they had a long day and they still have to make dinner, so their partner makes dinner for them. This love language is difficult because it is easy to become a person that does everything for them.

Physical Touch:

This type of person feels love through hugs, kisses, sitting, playing with hair, just being as close as physically possible. This person just likes to be touched at all times, no matter how small. This can be potentially dangerous to relationships because some people have a bubble and can get irritated with constant closeness and touch. This could also cause moving too fast in relationship situations. I thought that this would be my love language, for sure, but I didn’t get it in the results. I started to realize that I do like physical touch, but I too have a bubble and do not want anyone touching me at certain times.

So I decided to take the Five Love Languages Quiz, if you want to take it yourself you can find it here.

My results revealed that I find love in words of affirmation and quality time.

If you are interested in the love languages I recommend watching the video that I did, linked below.

I am super interested in human behavior and what makes us love and how we love so this was right up my alley.

Book Review: Tina Fey, Bossypants

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

Oh do I have a good one for you.

For my non-fiction book of the month, I chose Tina Fey’s autobiography, Bossypants.

If you guys are not familiar with Tina Fey she is, as Wikipedia claims her to be:

“Elizabeth Stamatina “Tina” Fey is an American actress, comedian, writer, producer, and playwright. She is best known for her work on the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live and for creating the acclaimed comedy series 30 Rock and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tina_Fey).

Not only did I not know her real name was Elizabeth (did I read the book thoroughly?) , I did not know that I admired her as much as I do now. As a child, it was always my dream to be on SNL. It still is, but further out of reach unfortunately on the basis that I am not funny.

Tina Fey’s writing style this entire book is so funny and witty that I literally read the thing in 2 days.

Tina starts off talking about her childhood growing up looking like a boy and not having any sexual experience except with the boy who would pick her up at night and makeout with her while he talked about other girls. She mentions her father, Don Fey, who according to her looked like Clint Eastwood. Don Fey was the polar opposite of Tina and was a pretty strict and stern man. She talks about a story where Don Fey buys a carpet shampooer to figure out that it is indeed broken and needed to be returned. Long story short he ends up leaving Tina at the store because he will not cough up $3.

Tina picks up a job at the Young Men’s Christian Association in another chapter, where she works the desk. Tina works with her co-worker Donna who works the phones. Donna was one to complain, but you could NEVER complain to Donna. Tina writes about how the certain rich members felt entitled to pass the line and go in front of people waiting to sign in.

Rich entitled male trying to skip the line: “Don’t you know who I am?”

Tina: “Don’t you know who I AM? Then how could I know who YOU are? We don’t know each other!”

Long story short Tina ends up stealing the new office position from Donna on the phones because she wouldn’t settle for being the underdog of any situation.

My favorite portion of the book was her focus on women in the workplace. She goes on to say how Amy Poehler would make a joke and the men on set would say how women aren’t funny. In which they would respond “We don’t fucking care”.

“It is an impressively arrogant move to conclude that just because you don’t like something, it is empirically not good…”

She talks about Chinese food and how just because she doesn’t like Chinese food doesn’t mean she is going to sit down and write articles about how she doesn’t like Chinese food.

“Don’t waste your energy trying to educate or change opinions. Go “Over! Under! Through!” and opinions will change organically when you’re the boss…”

She talks about sexism in the media and how men commonly wont like a show because they don’t want to “f*ck the cast”. Women are seen as objects in media, television, and the workplace!

My favorite quote and takeaway from the entire book is this right here:

“So my unsolicited advice to women in the workplace is this. When faced with sexism or ageism or lookism or even really aggressive Buddhism, ask yourself the following question: “Is this person in between me and what I want to do?” If the answer is no, ignore it and move on. Your energy is better used doing your work and outpacing people hat way. Then, when you’re in charge, don’t hire the people who were jerky to you.”

AE3AF9FC-0E90-42B1-BB2E-1C8CB258646F.JPG

30 Rock was a show I never watched, and apparently not a lot of people did either. Tina talks about how 30 Rock only took off because of Alec Baldwin and the cast and crew and producers were ready for it to end at any minute.

In the words of Tina Fey:

“We were not a hit”.

This show did not take off, and honestly what I had heard about it when it came out, I never even wanted to watch it. After reading this book I will 100% be watching this show because I believe it will apply to my humor now that I am older. How she talks about her own show, her own idea, and her own cast and crew is absolutely hilarious to me and I respect her honesty like no other. This show was basically nothing, it was waiting to be canceled after the pilot. But then!!!!!! It received the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in September.

Nobody saw that coming.

Image result for 30 rock emmy

The show proceeded to win 7 more Emmys and is really Tina’s showboat for the American Dream.

I also did not know Donald Glover was a writer for 30 Rock, fun fact.

And here it is, Saturday Night Live. My dream, my passion, my extremely out of reach goal that I will probably never reach considering I am pursuing a career in nursing.

Tina talks about how she was never really asked to be in sketches because all of her co-workers had faces that could create other characters while she just looked like herself in a wig, or her brother.

Except when she looked like Sarah Palin.

She literally was casted for this part because she had brown hair, glasses, and slightly resembled the politician. She wasn’t even working for SNL when she got offered this. So what did she have to lose really?

One of my favorite sketches she did as Sarah Palin was with Amy Poehler as Hillary Clinton. If you are not familiar with that sketch, PLEASE proceed to watch the video below before continuing on.

Now that you have experienced the pure humor and brilliance these two share in this sketch. The subtle feminism focus is what I loved about this as well. They really focus on sexism in that campaign and how these women experienced different sides of the “sexism coin”. Hillary wasn’t liked and called a ballbuster, while Palin wasn’t liked and called Caribou Barbie. They were marginalized based on their gender. She talks about how this was a big feminism ploy but you couldn’t even tell because of all the jokes.

I never really thought I would ever want to read this book nor would I go out of my way to buy it. I picked it up at a thrift store for $.50 (Sorry Tina). I am SO glad that I did.

This was one of the most enjoyable autobiographies I have ever read and I truly did not want to put it down. I have already recommended this book to like 3 of my friends (my only friends) and will recommend it to all of you.

I never realized how big of a Fey fan I was until I read this book and it is making me go watch 30 Rock because I feel bad.

What a girl BOSS.

If you are interested in the book you can purchase it here.

travel diaries: allegheny state park

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

So, I have been on winter break for almost a month and a half now. Unfortunately, since the break started I have been on two antibiotics and been a very sick girl! My best friend decided to drag me out of bed and force me on a road trip to see some of the beauty this world has to offer.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

So we set off in the winter weather for a couple hour drive to go up to Allegheny State Park.

For it being January, the weather was pretty nice. It was still chilly, but the drive down was absolutely beautiful and I wore a dress. Good thing for a sick girl to do, right?!

Anyway, Sara drove and I controlled the music. It was her playlist, but I controlled the aux so it counts right?

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

The park was absolutely beautiful and even though we didn’t have the winter snow or the fall leaves, it was still a sight to see. I loved sitting there and breathing the fresh air in and listening to the literal silence that was surrounding us. Living in a busy suburb with constant noise you never realize what actual silence is until you’re in a place like this.

We walked around for a couple hours frantically looking for bears and then later realizing that they are in hibernation, it is winter.

We took some pictures, did some minimal hiking, and then realized it was far too cold! We ventured past the road closed sign and did most of our exploring because thats what rebellious 20 year olds do these days.

Processed with VSCO with a6 presetProcessed with VSCO with a6 preset

Although this trip was short lived, it was one of my favorites. Sara forced me out of bed and out into the fresh air for just a couple hours and I instantly felt my spirits lift. I highly recommend to get outside and put down your phone for a couple hours (unless it is golden hour and you take these cute pics). Go out of your comfort zone and say yes to days when you feel like staying in bed. It made a fun memory and it cleared my head so much.

One of my goals for this new year is to take footage of my little adventures and get back into creating videos. I used to do this with every trip I went on, but was embarrassed to post them anywhere and ultimately stopped doing so. I decided to make a video for this little trip of ours to inspire me to do more of it.

Heres a link to my little video if you are interested in watching.

(the stabilization on my GoPro is all wack, so I apologize for the little shakiness)

As always, do things that are good for your mental health! Do things that make you HAPPY. It is OKAY to take a day off of being productive and do things that make you spark inside.

To Sara, thank you for being the one who has been there for me during my ups and downs of my mental health and my life in general, you are my soulmate and best friend.

Do something for YOU today.

Book Review: When Life Gives You Lululemons by Lauren Weisberger

IMG_3600.JPGI am a book worm.

I have always loved to read and I have always loved a new book. Unfortunately I have lost myself in the world of social media and lost my love for literature. I decided to create a goal to read at least 12 books this year, one every month. I am hoping that this will be an easy task to obtain, but I have learned to set my goals low and work to aim higher.

So the first book in my book review section is When Life Gives You Lululemons by Lauren Weisberger.

I received this book for Christmas from my mother, but I may or may have no picked it out because of the aesthetically pleasing book cover. The “packaging” (lol) is super cute and definitely caught my eye. Well down Lauren!

I am not a big fiction reader, so picking this up was outside of my comfort zone for sure. I used to love fiction books, but once I got into self help and non-fiction books I never looked back. Except of course for Harry Potter, but that is obvious.

Lauren Weisberger is also the author of The Devil Wears Prada, so I was immediately attracted to this book, and I am GLAD I picked it up.

This book is about 3 friends who connect in an extremely interesting way. Emily, is a L.A. working girl whose main job is to diffuse celebrity “uh-ohs” and steer the mistake away from the public eye. She has a loving husband Miles who is a typical L.A. hottie who is obsessed with Emily and wants nothing more than for her to have a baby, but that is NOT in Emily’s plan. Emily was by far my favorite character with her attitude and humor and her love for wine.

Emily is friends with Miriam. Miriam is a down to earth, quiet, completely opposite of Emily suburban housewife. She used to live in the city with her husband Paul, but moved to Greenwich, Connecticut so that her kids could grow up with a backyard. (How sweet). Miriam has been long time friends with Miriam and has tried to convince her to move to the suburbs multiple times. Miriam focuses on her sex life, or lack thereof, her “mommy belly”, and her outfits almost the entire book. She is the friend that always thinks she is fat, when she is not. Paul and Miriam’s relationship goes through a lot of ups and downs and my opinion of Paul changed wildly throughout the book. Miriam has a long time best friend named Karolina.

Karolina is a beautiful, ex Victoria’s Secret model and current wife of Senator Graham. Senator Graham who is in fact running to be President. This book focuses on Karolina’s run in with the law that turns out to be an elaborate set up to bring her down. I don’t want to go into too much detail because it will give away a lot, but the entire situation has so many twists and turns that I literally found myself getting so mad at all of the characters and their involvement.

This book gave me so many feelings of hurt, anger, empowerment, and that is everything I look for in a book. I felt like I was watching an episode of Desperate Housewives and It was everything I loved in a soap opera.

This book in total was 340 pages and I finished it in two days. I was sick when I opened this book and boy am I glad, because I don’t know If I could have put it down. This was definitely such a good book to get me back on my fiction kick! I would totally recommend this book to anyone who likes funny, housewife drama.

If you guys have any books you want me to review, comment below!
